Durward Felton Reed, Jr.

Durward Felton Reed, Jr., 92, of 516 S. Edenton Road Street, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, November 28, 2015 in his home.

    Mr. Reed was born in Perquimans County on May 16, 1923, and was the son of the late Durward F. Reed, Sr. and Mary Tucker Reed. A graduate of Perquimans County High School and Wake Forest University, he had served in the US Navy during World War II. The owner of Reed Oil & Gas Company for over 60 years, he had also served as the Perquimans County Finance Officer for 33 years. A faithful member of Hertford United Methodist Church where he had served as both a teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School, in years past he had served on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners, had been a Cub Scout Leader, and on the Board of Trustees of Albemarle Hospital.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three children, infants Karen Kay Reed and Durward Felton Reed, III, and by Nancy Reed Winslow Riddick; and by his wife of over 70 years, Edythe Payne Reed, who died just a week ago on November 21st.

   Surviving are a daughter, Judy R. Spear (J.C.) of Elizabeth City; two sons, Robert Lindsay Reed (Deborah) and Gary B. Reed (Jo Ann), all of Hertford; a son-in-law, Roger Riddick of Hobbsville; a brother, Lindsay Reed (Virginia) of Raleigh; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Livengood (David) of Thomasville; seven grandchildren, Angela Spear Cobb (Jim), Heather Higgins (Brian), Kristy L. Reed, Robbie Reed (Amber), Jason Winslow, Brad Winslow (Kristy), and Brandon Winslow; and seven great-grandchildren, Kelley and Carey Stancil, Dylan and Maci Higgins, Trenton Reed, and James and Lucas Winslow.

   A graveside service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery and will be officiated by the Rev. H. Gene Boyce. Friends may join the family at the residence.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

   The family wishes to express their appreciation to caregivers, Cami, Melvia, Tina, Sandy, Joyce, and Trudy, Shay, and Lulu, and to the other caregivers who have assisted them.

   Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
