Mattie Wray Morse Godfrey, 79, of 216 Little River Shores Road, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, November 28, 2015 in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.
Mrs. Godfrey was born in Perquimans County on April 20, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Earl Ray Morse and Pauline Corbitt Morse Harris. A homemaker, she was a faithful member of New Hope United Methodist Church where she sang in the Adult Choir and had been active in the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Marion Godfrey, Sr.; a sister, Earline M. Godfrey; and by a brother, William Marshall Morse.
Lovingly known by her family as "Mema", she is survived by her daughter, Vickie G. Erps and husband Monte; her sons, J. Marion Godfrey, Jr. and wife Debbie, David Alan Godfrey and wife Gayle, and Jamie Sam Godfrey; her sisters, Juanita M. Byrum, Faye M. Nixon, and Dorothy M. Owens, all of Hertford; nine grandchildren, Tammi Godfrey Byrum and husband Andrew, Melissa Godfrey Miller and husband Tony, Justin James Godfrey and wife Amy, Jonathan Alan Godfrey and wife Amber, Jennifer Godfrey Robinson and husband Paul, Jessica Gayle Godfrey, Lindsey Aaron Erps, Shelby Lynn Erps, and Jacob Sam Godfrey; and by six great-grandchildren, Lilah Marion Byrum, Maylin Halle Miller, Hannah Grace Godfrey, Haven Wray Godfrey, Lucas Wayne Robinson, and Briella Renae Long.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in New Hope United Methodist Church and will be officiated by the Rev. Renee` Edwards. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church following the service on Wednesday and all other times at the residence.
