John Albert “Jack” Doane, 93, of West Queen Street, Edenton, NC, died Monday, November 30, 2015 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Jack was born in Beaufort, NC, the fourth of seven children of the late Leon and Myra Tatem Doane. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on a Destroyer escorting ships to Europe in the North Atlantic. After the war, he had a long career at Ford Motor Company spanning some 35 years, culminating in the first IBM operating system at Ford, and ushering in a new era of computing and auto manufacturing. After retirement Jack moved to Edenton and served the community in many ways. He started a commercial peach orchard, cooked at the American Legion for various events, was a member of Edenton Baptist Church, the Edenton Lions Club, and the Chowan Golf & Country Club. Later years were enriched by friendships at the McDonald’s breakfast group, his golfing buddies, bridge and poker friends, and Wednesday services at church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sadie Smith Doane, his son Jeff, and brothers, Max and Raymond.
Surviving are his brothers, Leon and Luther; sisters, Mildred and Myra; his son, Scott; grandchildren, Miles and Ashley; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. The graveside portion of the service will be held at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA.
