Edward O. Smith, 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at his home in Pasadena, California with his wife of 56 years, Anne, and his only child, Becky, by his side.
Ed, as he was known by his friends, was born in Tacoma, Washington on June 16, 1934, and was the son of the late Ray and Margaret Smith. A 1956 graduate of the University of Washington, after which he soon met his wife Anne in Columbia, SC, where he was stationed with the Army at Fort Jackson. They moved to Pasadena in 1959 where Ed became active in many local charity and civic groups. He had served as past president of many of those organizations, including the East Pasadena Rotary Club, The University of Washington Club of Southern California, the University Club of Pasadena, The Pasadena Quarterbacks Club, The Pasadena Bond Club, and The Alaroma Dance Club. Ed had served on the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Historical Society, as well as Five Acres, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Washington Alumni Association in Seattle. A loyal 40 year member of the Tournament of Roses, Ed was also the Eastern Team Chairman of the Junior Rose Bowl of Pasadena. He had retired as Vice President of Merrill Lynch Pasadena where he enjoyed a career spanning 40 years.
Surviving are his wife Anne Hollowell Smith (the daughter of the late Ray and Maxine Hollowell and formerly of Chowan County); and his daughter, Becky Hoech and husband Lee of Charlotte, NC.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity close to your heart.
