David Sherry Carpenter, 78, of 169 Paige Riddick Road, Gates, NC, died Sunday, November 29, 2015 in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Erbacon, WV on August 27, 1937, and was the son of the late Russell Raleigh and Margie Ruhama Casto Carpenter. A retired diesel mechanic, he was a member of Temple Baptist Church for 51 years where he had faithfully served as a trustee for many years, and had also enjoyed membership in both the National Rifle Association and Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion. A veteran, he had served in the US Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Penny R. Carpenter, four sisters, Betty Sue Shoemaker, Dawn Hope Smith, Frances Parmalee, and Melody Gates, and by two brothers, Jacob L. Carpenter and Jeremiah Solomon Carpenter.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 53 years, Connie Meadows Carpenter; a daughter, Sherry Carpenter Woody and husband Clif of Byron, GA; a son, David Greig Carpenter and fiancée’ Shirley Kae Drake of Grand Island, NE; three sisters, Judith Crocker of Georgia, Valley Rose of West Virginia, and Sandra Fuller of Virginia; a brother, Russ Carpenter of California; eight grandchildren, Trey Woody and wife Brittany, Seth and Spencer Woody, and Tamara, Crystia, Robert, David and Andrew Carpenter; two great-grandsons, DeDiere and Santiago; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in Temple Baptist Church, 1322 N. George Washington Hwy, Chesapeake, VA by Pastor Jerry Greco. Burial with military honors will follow that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milner’s Road, Suffolk, VA. Friends may join the family Monday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
