Paul White Stokely, 84, of 120 Cove Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, December 30, 2015 in Waterbrooke of Elizabeth City.
Mr. Stokely was born in Perquimans County on August 17, 1931, and was the son of the late Murden and Celtic White Stokely. Known as "Big John" to his co-workers and many friends, he retired from Ford Motor Company after more than 34 years of employment, was a member of Berea Church of Christ, and was a veteran of the US Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Blake Stokely, two sisters, Elizabeth Heath and husband Bill and Inez Long and husband Howard, four brothers, Jim Stokely and wife Mattie, Jerry Stokely and wife Christine, Ike Stokely and wife Kathleen, and Oscar Stokely, and a brother-in-law, Ralph Swineford.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Edith Chase Stokely; a daughter, Shaun Gajowski and husband Bob; three sons, Murden Stokely and wife Carol, Sheldon Stokely, and Ernest Stokely, all of Hertford; three sisters, Louise Swineford of Raleigh, Peggy Tepper and husband Jim of Hertford, and Annie Reed Lewis of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Berea Church of Christ by Ministers Harold Rutledge and Dr. I. Kimble "Sonny" Furrow. Friends may join the family in the church social hall immediately following the services on Friday, and all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Berea Church of Christ, 1664 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC 27944.
