Miriam Hurdle Swain

   Miriam Harriett Hurdle Swain, 56, of 231 Swamp Road, Hertford, NC, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

   Mrs. Swain, a lifelong resident of Perquimans County, was born on January 5, 1960, and was the daughter of the late Howard Doctrine Hurdle and Hazel Blanchard Hurdle. A graduate of East Carolina University, she had received a BS degree in Medical Records Science and had retired as the Supervisor of Medical Records with Albemarle Mental Health Center in Elizabeth City. Presently she was employed as a legal assistant with Dixon & Thompson Law Firm in Edenton.

   A faithful and lifelong member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, she was a member of its Adult Choir and the Bettie Stallings Circle.

   A loving wife, devoted daughter, faithful sister, and awesome aunt, she is survived by her husband of nearly 14 years, James E. Swain, Sr.; a sister, Rebecca Hurdle Hamill and husband Nelson of Winterville; a brother, Howard Wayne Hurdle and wife Linda of Hertford; a niece, Jenna Hurdle of Greenville; and a nephew, Ron Hurdle of Hertford. Also surviving are James' family, his son, James E. "Sparky" Swain, Jr., and his granddaughter, Jade Swain, both of Chesapeake, VA.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church by her pastor, the Rev. Howard Sutton. A private burial will follow on the family plot at Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford. Friends may join the family Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and all other times at the home.
