Justin Thomas Long

December 21, 1978 — February 9, 2016

Justin Thomas Long

After a protracted battle with cancer, Justin Thomas Long, of Eure, NC, died Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the age of 37 in his home where he was surrounded by his family and friends. Justin fought his illness with courage, humility, and dignity, and the strength he showed with each day of his battle was a testament to his willingness to not give up.

Born in Ahoskie on December 21, 1978, he was the youngest of three sons born to Johnny Sterling Long and Janet Parker Horton, both of Eure. Justin was a talented artist and woodworker and he and his father spent many hours creating special pieces of art for festivals and shows. A special bond was formed between the two of them that will never be broken. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carlyle Manley and Nellie Spivey Parker, and his paternal grandfather, Ralph Sterling Long.

In addition to his parents, surviving are his three sons, Cody Thomas Long, Ryan Michael Chapman, both of Eure, and Liam Allen Stallings of Hobbsville; his step-mother, Amy Vick-Long; step-father, Thomas Horton; maternal grandmother, Nell Powell Long; a special grandfather, Gene Webb White, all of Eure; three brothers, Jody P. Long (Melanie) of Kill Devil Hills, Jason K. Long (Christie Evans), and Adam S. Long (Jaelyn Johnson), all of Eure; two step-brothers, Tommy Horton of Ahoskie and John Horton of Eure; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Justin’s closest and dearest friend, J.C. Coburn, was his rock and pillar throughout his illness. He loved him dearly, as well as J.C.’s wife, Debbie, and their children. His time with them was especially meaningful to him.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the physicians and staff at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. His treatments made him a frequent visitor and he developed many special relationships there.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church social hall immediately following the service on Friday, and all other times at the residence, 270 Little Island Road, Eure.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.
