Emily Turner Harrell, 107, formerly of Hertford, NC, and in recent years of Elizabeth City, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016 in Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Harrell was born in Chowan County on February 14, 1909, and was the daughter of the late Jerry Floyd and Lydia Dail Turner. A homemaker and self-employed seamstress, she was a member of Bethlehem Church of Christ, the Albemarle Craftsman Fair, the Pasquotank County Arts Council, and had been active in the Home Extension Service. An active quilter, she was best known for making Armenian Lace, and traveling extensively teaching that art. The recipient of many awards and honors for her lace work, one of her design pieces is on display in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, T.T. Harrell; a son-in-law, Freddie Hengel; a grandson, and two great-grandsons.
Surviving are two daughters, Emily Juanita Hengel of Suffolk, VA and Peggie H. Anderson and husband Ernest of Elizabeth City; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by Ministers Melvin Styons and Phillip Alligood. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at Ernest and Peggie’s home, 100 Quail Run, Elizabeth City.
