Ima Jean Waff

   Ima Jean Layton Waff, 83, of 103 Crestwood Lane, Edenton, NC, and known to many as “Mama Jean”, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 in Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro.

    Mrs. Waff was born in Chowan County on September 12, 1932 and was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Harrell Layton. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church, its Joy Sunday School Class, and the Advance Extension Homemakers, she was a homemaker in every sense of the word, loving needlepoint, crochet work, flowers, gardening, crafts, and square dancing.

     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Waff; sisters, Edna Mae Dail, Gladys Ward, Emma Byrum, and Carolyn Chappell; and by brothers, Gilbert, Elbert (Buddy), Raymond, Fred, Melvin, and Linwood Layton.

    Surviving are her children, Sharon Waff, and Al Waff and wife Pat, all of Edenton; two brothers, Sherlon Layton and wife Carolyn of Edenton and J.T. Layton and wife Grace of Jacksonville; a granddaughter, Nicole Hill and husband Charles of Edenton; grandsons, Brian Waff and friend Rick Minter of Charlotte, and Scot Waff of Edenton; great-granddaughters, Melanie Waff, and Sara, Gracie, Lily, and Melody Hill; and faithful friends, Robin and Lowell Gieseke, and Gina Smith.

    Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. Bob Young.  Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.  Friends may join the family Friday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, 1004 Macedonia Road, or to the Chowan Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 629, both in Edenton, NC 27932.
