Melvin Carroll Lane, Sr., 78, of 417 Yeopim Road, Edenton, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from Sentara Norfolk Heart Hospital, where he was surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Mr. Lane was born in Chowan County on October 5, 1937, and was the son of the late Luther and Leora Goodwin Lane. A retired power line supervisor for the Town of Edenton where he had been employed for over 30 years, he was a faithful member of Albemarle Baptist Church having served as a deacon and as Chairman of the board of deacons, as well as on numerous church committees, and loved doing whatever he could for the Lord. He also enjoyed membership with the Edenton Fire Department where he had volunteered for over 27 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thurman Lane and his wife Nancy, two sisters, Beulah Boyce Turner and her husband Vernon and Thelma Koenig and her husband Lou, and by a brother-in-law, Redmond Newby.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Kathleen Overton Lane; a son, Melvin Carroll Lane, Jr. and fiancée Vickie of Goldsboro; two daughters, Kathy Lane Bibey and husband Dan of Nags Head and Jennifer Lane Walker and husband Tracy of Maple; two sisters, Julia Ashley and husband Roy and Bessie Newby, all of Edenton; two brothers, Alton Lane and wife Dorothy of Edenton and Jimmy Lane and wife Margie of Belvidere; four grandchildren, Gunner, Valerie, Weston, and Josh; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Albemarle Baptist Church, 445 Soundside Road, Edenton, by the Revs. Terry Williams and Tommy Berry. A private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family Sunday in the church beginning at 2:00 p.m., and all other times at the residence.
