Frances Ann Smith Greene, 74, of 98 Harrell Lane, Eure, NC, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016 in The Gates House.
Mrs. Greene was born in Tarpon Springs, FL on October 30, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Edgar Neal and Inez Rasmussen Smith. She was raised in Norfolk, VA and was a graduate of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach. Early adult life was spent showing champion Norwegian Elkhounds as a member of the Tidewater Kennel Club. Later she worked with AT & T and retired as a supervisor in 1979. The next decade of her life was spent raising her two children, and with them spent many years volunteering at their schools, as Band Booster president, happily watching on many Fridays and Saturdays as the band played, and then shuttling the kids back and forth and chaperoning on the activity bus. After the kids got older, she went back to work with the Gates County Public Library, and in 2003 retired a final time from the Albemarle Regional Library.
An avid reader, among her favorite authors in later years was Janet Evanovich. She also enjoyed working puzzles, doing cross stitch, crocheting, flowers, lighthouses, coffee, and humming birds. She was never too tired to stop at a Starbucks. Retirement meant doting on her grandchildren and taking day trips with her best friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Billie Louise Moore.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Joseph H. Greene, Jr.; her son, Terry E. Greene and wife Sharon Rena of Eure; her daughter, Debra Anne Greene of Wilmington; her step-son, David Van Waardenberg and wife Kathy of San Jose, CA; grandchildren, Savannah and Joey Greene of Eure, and Curtis and Taylor Van Waardenberg of San Jose; and best friends, Carl and Bonnie Hunsicker.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence, or in the church social hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Research, or to the Gates County Public Library.
