Eugene Nixon “Pete” Mansfield, Sr., 77, of 436 Ocean Highway North, Hertford, NC, joined his deceased loved ones, on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from the Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach.
Pete was born in Perquimans County on February 16, 1939, and was the son of the late William McKinley Mansfield and Annie Julia Nixon Mansfield. A hard worker all of his life, as a teenager he worked with his brother in the training of harness horses, was licensed by the state as a Pump Calibrator and worked in that field with Winslow Oil Company for 24 years, in 1977 established Mansfield & Sons Licensed Electricians, and later retired as an electrician from the Perquimans County School System. A member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, he had proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his son, Matison Jay Mansfield; and by his sisters, Sybil Frances Mansfield Bateman Russell and Katherine Mansfield Powell, and by brothers, William McKinley Mansfield, Jr., Edgar Ray “Whitey” Mansfield, and Thomas Mansfield.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Joan Annette Harris Mansfield; a son, Eugene Nixon Mansfield, Jr. and wife Glenda Joy Chiieff Mansfield of Saskatchewan, Canada; a daughter-in-law, Marydith Nicole Brubaker Mansfield of Aydlett; five grandchildren, Christopher, Tracy Lynn, Thomas Egan, Curtis Pete, and Diamond; and four great-grandchildren, Samuel, Mary, Aiden, and Alyssa.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by his pastor, The Rev. Michael Williams. Marine Honors will be accorded in the funeral home, and a private entombment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service.
