Elsie Mae Bunch Nixon, (Ms. Elsie, as who is known by most and Grammie, as she is known by family), 94, went peacefully to heaven on May 2, 2016. She was born in Chowan County, NC, the daughter of the late John S. Bunch and Rosa Mary Bunch, and lived most of her life in Rocky Hock, a community of which she was proud to be a part. She lived surrounded by farmland, wonderful neighbors, and a large family of brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Family was very important to her and she has passed that value on to her own children and grandchildren. She was a loyal member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church where she cared especially for the sick, the bereaved, the little children, and her Sunday school class, the Bertha Dale Sunday School Class.
She married Louis Leon Nixon in the early 1940’s during World War II time when he served his country as a Medic in the US Army in Eastern Europe. She was a devoted wife to him during their short life together. He died November 3, 1960 in a truck accident. In time since his death, she raised their three children alone and with the help of family and friends.
She was a proud graduate of Chowan High School. She worked at Roses Dime Store downtown Edenton for several years after graduation. After raising her children, she went back to work, this time at Seabrook Blanching Corp. where she retired.
She was the loving mother of Annie Ruth Nixon (Anne) and her husband, Roy Pickles of Wake Forest, NC; Cynthia Gail Nixon, and her husband, Dail Hardison (deceased) of Wilson, NC; and Louis Leon Nixon, Jr. and his wife, Amy Nixon of Edenton, NC. She was the proud and loving Grandmother to Todd Franklin Allred, Jamie Allred Gerrard, Nichole Nixon Furlough, Haley Nixon Jones, and Mary Catherine Hardison. Grammie was also so very proud of her great grandchildren; James Allred, Grace Allred, Ava Gerrard, Scarlett Gerrard, Kaleigh Furlough, and Ayden Furlough. Ms. Elsie loved her nieces and nephews and their children like her own: Carol Byrum Julian, Missy Bunch, Sheila Bunch Perry, Dr. John Bunch, Dwayne Goodwin, Kenny Goodwin, Marty Goodwin, Dr. Cristy Privette, Victoria Bunch, Kathryn Bunch, and Cameron Bunch.
She was preceded in death by her four brothers and two sisters; Elbert L. Bunch, Louis E. Bunch, Clyde S. Bunch, Mack A. Bunch, Shirley B. Byrum, and Hazel R. Bunch. She was also preceded in death by Frances Byrum Goodwin, Sherry Bunch Nixon, and Randy Bunch, nieces and nephew.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church with Dr. James Horton officiating. A private burial will follow the service at Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6 to7 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton.
Flowers are welcomed or contributions may be made to Rocky Hock Baptist Church, 113 Rocky Hock Church Road, Edenton, NC 27932.
The family expresses gratitude and appreciation to the numbers of family and friends who have offered prayers, sent cards, made calls, and visited their beloved mother and grandmother. They especially want to thank WilMed in Wilson, NC and its attentive staff for the loving care they have given to her during her stay with them.
