Annie Martha Spruill Hare Harrell, 87, formerly of Mexico Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in Vidant Inpatient Hospice, Greenville.
Mrs. Harrell was born in Chowan County on February 14, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Lawson and Ruby Tarkington Spruill. Formerly employed with both the Chowan County Tax, and Register of Deeds offices, she was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she had served as a GA Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and had worked for many years in the Vacation Bible School program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard Hare and Elwood Harrell; by her brother, James Stillman, and by sisters, Alice Teague, Emma Hollowell, and Agnes Hardison.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Youmans and husband Reed of Davis, CA, Nancy Vincek and husband Edward of Pinetops, and Wendy Batten and husband Tommy of New Bern. Also surviving are Elwood’s children, Brenda Smith and husband Clyde, Sherry Scott and husband Barry, and David Harrell and wife Debbie, all of Chesapeake, VA and Dennis Harrell and wife Sherrie and Gregory Harrell and wife Christa, all of Virginia Beach. Together Annie Martha and Elwood shared 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 7th, at 2:00 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. Bob Young. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church the hour prior to the service, or again immediately following the graveside rites.
