Dorris Frances Byrum White, 88, of 204 Holiday Island Road, Hertford, NC, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016 in her home.
Mrs. White was born in Perquimans County on October 27, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Edward Andrew and Martha Etta “Pattie” Jordan Byrum. Employed with Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation for 52 years, she retired in 1998 after serving her last 15 years as the company’s General Manager. The first woman manager of an electric co-op in the state, she had held every office in the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives, including service as its President. Upon retirement and reflecting on her years of work, she said, “I can truly say that there was never a single day in all that time when I did not look forward to coming into the office”. A long-time member of Hertford Baptist Church, she was a former member of the Hertford branch of the RBC Bank Board of Directors, and was an avid Bridge player.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edmond White, Jr.; and by her brothers, Edward Byrum, Jr., James Byrum, and Percy Byrum.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha E. White of Hertford, and Frances L. White of Wilmington; a son, C. Edmond White, III of Wake Forest; two grandsons, Charles T. White and Henry S. White; three nieces, Karen McMahon, Linda Byrum, and Theresa Byrum; and a nephew, Wesley Byrum, Jr.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. Gregory Clark. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall of Hertford Baptist Church immediately following the graveside service, and all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hertford Baptist Church, PO Box 34, or to the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, 462 Snug Harbor Road, both in Hertford, NC 27944.
