Nelle Carter Willey

   Nelle Louise Carter Willey, 93, of Abbotswood at Stonehenge, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2016 in Rex Hospital, Raleigh, N.C.

 

   Mrs. Willey was born on November 12, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Charles Herman Carter, Sr. and Rosa Nell Welch Carter. A graduate of East Carolina Teacher’s College, now ECU, she taught Home Economics at Enfield High School, and later the 5th Grade at Enfield Graded School. A longtime resident of Enfield, she and her husband, the late Harry Nowell Willey, also a teacher, returned to their native Gates County after retirement. Mrs. Willey spent the final years of her life at Abbotswood where she was active in many activities including the Knitters and Crocheters Club and served as a Welcome Ambassador for new residents.

 

   In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Herman Carter, Jr.

 

   Surviving are her son and his family, Henry N. Willey and wife Ginny, and their children, Matthew, Sarah, and Lauren, of Wake Forest.

 

   A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 5th at 2:00 p.m. in Gatesville Baptist Church, where she was a member, and will be officiated by The Rev. Ray Brickhouse, pastor, and The Rev. Gene Asbill, former pastor. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the memorial service. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

 

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gatesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 167, Gatesville, NC 27938.
