Lawrence Battle Carpenter, Jr., 78, of 211 Shannonhouse Road, Edenton, NC, died Thursday, July 28, 2016 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Suffolk, VA on February 19, 1938, and was the son of the late Lawrence Battle Carpenter, Sr. and Florence Geneva Duck Carpenter Nixon. Retired from Carter Vault Company, he was a member of Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ, and was an avid Edenton Steamers fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Barnes Carpenter; three sisters, Mary Asbell, Nora Upton, and Elizabeth Harrell; and by a step-daughter, Sandy Holiday.
Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Vonnie Wilson Carpenter; a son, Wayne Carpenter of Fredericksburg, VA; a step-son, Lionel Copeland and wife Paula of Elizabeth City; two step-daughters, Becky Wilder and husband Toby and Dianne Davenport and husband Wayne, all of Edenton; three sisters, Frances Mathias of Suffolk, Betty Jane Crumpler of Macon, GA, and Stella Trout of Pensacola, FL; a brother, Sonny Carpenter of Suffolk; and five step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be officiated by Minister Bobby Cohoon. A private burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park in Franklin, VA. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at Becky and Toby’s home, 204 Shannonhouse Road, Edenton.
