Clatta Greene Sawyer

   Clatta Greene Sawyer, 99, of 201 Williamson Road, Portsmouth, VA, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016 in Mayfair House, Portsmouth.

   Mrs. Sawyer, just 10 days shy of turning 100 years old, was born in the Eure community of Gates County on August 26, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Sam and Ella Umphlett Greene. The Financial Secretary of Port Norfolk Baptist Church for 35 years, she retired from that position when she was 88 years old. In addition to her membership at Port Norfolk, other affiliations enjoyed were with the Scottish Rites Ladies.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Elmarie Parker and Nellie Ruth Hill; her brother, Haywood Greene; and by her husband, Charlie Clarence “Judge” Sawyer.

   Surviving are her son, Charles Sawyer and wife Marie of Portsmouth; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

   She was buried in the family plot next to her husband at Eure Baptist Church Cemetery in Gates County. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. in Port Norfolk Baptist Church, and will be officiated by the Rev. Terry Taylor. Friends may join the family in the church during the hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m., and then again in the social hall immediately following the service.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad Street, Portsmouth, VA 23707 and designated for use in the general fund.

   The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the care given to Clatta by the staff of The Mayfair House, and by the Hospice caregivers, over these last months of declining health.
