J.E. Matthews

   James Edward "J.E." Matthews, 52, of Elsie Court, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, August 20, 2016 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

   J.E. was born in Pasquotank County on October 30, 1963, and was the son of the late Wilbert Edward and Ethel White Matthews. Employed as a commercial truck driver for many years, he attended Camden Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Clyde Lane.

   Surviving are his wife of nearly 11 years, Karole Lane Matthews; two sons, James Tyler Matthews and Edward Lee Matthews, all of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Mildred Barnes and husband David of Camden and Marie Cuthrell and husband Michael of Hertford; two brothers, William Matthews and wife Teresa and Robert Matthews and wife Lisa, all of Elizabeth City; mother-in-law, Joan Lane; a brother-in-law, Duncan Lane and companion Beth, all of Hertford; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

   Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by Roger Sawyer. A private burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at the home of his mother-in-law, Joan Lane, 2645 Harvey Point Road, Hertford.
