Elizabeth “Betsy” Campen, 70, of East King Street, Edenton, NC, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Windsor.
Mrs. Campen was born in Edenton on October 7, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Sidney Sawyer and Dorothy Elizabeth Webb Campen. An accomplished artist, she was a member of Edenton Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bierowski, a son, John Jacob Bierowski, and by a brother, Joe Campen.
Surviving are her son, Martin Alexander York and wife Cary of Richmond, VA; a brother, Judge Sid Campen and wife Patty of Oxford; a sister-in-law, Lenita Campen of Edenton; two granddaughters, Ruby Virginia York and Grace Elizabeth York; and many extended family members and friends.
Mrs. Campen graduated Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975, with a degree in Art Education. She spent her life between St. Croix, U.S.V.I and Richmond, Virginia. She owned an art gallery and frame shop in Christiansted St. Croix, and taught art at The Good Hope School. She became one of the most well-known, prolific artists in the USVI, teaching classes, organizing shows, charity events, and leaving a permanent mark on the community and culture of the island that will last for centuries. Her work has been featured by American Artist Magazine, The American Watercolor Society, The VI. Orchid Society. She was a patron, teacher and friend to anyone she met, and became pivotal in encouraging many people to start galleries, sell art, or develop their own skills.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 27th, at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church, and will be officiated by the Rev. David Brooks. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, is assisting the family with arrangements.
There will also be a memorial service in Christiansted St. Croix on the same date, at the same time.
