John M. O’Connor, 79, of Edenton, NC, and formerly of Latham, NY, died on Sunday, August 28, 2016 in his home.
John received his BS in Math from Siena College where he was active in football, the Debate Club, and the Student Senate. He received his MS in Math from Adelphi University and did extensive graduate work at SUNY, Albany.
He served the Niskayuna School System starting as a Math teacher and then as an administrator for 31 years. Among his professional accomplishments, he was elected the first president of the Capital Area Principals Association.
Active in St. Ambrose Church in Latham as chairman of the church’s school board, as a Eucharistic Minister, and as Lector, after moving to Edenton, he served as Director of Religious Education and as President of the Parish Council at St. Anne Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Kathie O’Connor; his daughters, Kara Kearney and husband Kevin of Severna Park, MD, Maura Collins and husband Ed of Clifton Park, NY; and his daughter-in-law, Marcy Callahan O’Connor of Latham, NY. He is also lovingly survived by his grandchildren, Jack and Don O’Connor, Katie, Clare, and Ryan Kearney, and Meaghan, Aidan, and Helen Collins. He will be forever remembered by his extended family, The Redmond Newell, Ted Burke, and Don Morris families.
He was preceded in death by his son, Andy; and just a week ago, by his daughter, Katie.
A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 31st, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Anne Catholic Church, 207 N. Broad Street, Edenton, NC. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Albemarle Home Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
A memorial service for John and Katie will be held in Latham, NY at a future date, and those arrangements will be announced as they become available.
