Alice Jeanne Jackson Ward, 79, of Cottonwood Drive, Hertford, NC, passed away Monday, August 29, 2016 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.
Mrs. Ward was born in Norfolk, VA on March 11, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Dillard Morgan and Roxanna Chappell Jackson. A graduate of Perquimans County High School and later the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in Business Administration, she was the President and CEO of Jackson Wholesale, and in earlier years was a teacher with Suffolk City Schools and Albemarle Academy. A member of Hertford Baptist Church where she had served as a teacher in both Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, she had also volunteered with Perquimans County Schools, Open Door Food Pantry, and Albemarle Hospital. Other community involvements included service on the Board of Directors for both the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce and the Newbold-White House, and as Past President on the Perquimans County Library Board.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Ward.
Surviving are her three sons, Mark Winslow and wife Lynn, Michael "Money" Winslow and wife Michelle, and Matt Winslow and wife Dee; and four granddaughters who lovingly called her “Maw Maw”, Ali, Meredith, Mattison, and Kaylee, all of Hertford. Also surviving are Charles' two daughters, three step-sons, and their families.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery, and will be officiated by Rev. Howard Sutton. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is handling arrangements.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Alice Jeanne's caregivers, Patrice Snowden and Janice Dance, for all their love, care, and compassion during her time of need.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to Hertford Baptist Church, PO Box 34, Bethel Baptist Church, 794 Burnt Mill Road, or to Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, in care of John Mansfield, 801 W. Grubb St., all in Hertford, NC 27944.
