Daniel James "Dan" Vaughan, 70, of Hertford, NC, died on Sunday, September 4, 2016 while in hospice care at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
Dan was born in Washington, DC on August 25, 1946 to the late Joseph and Lorraine Monnat Vaughan. After attending Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA and graduating from his beloved alma mater, Villanova University, in 1968, he married Barbara "Bambi" Murray on August 9, 1969 in Princeton, NJ. Forty-seven years later, Bambi was by Dan's side when he succumbed to ALS.
A veteran, Dan joined the Navy in 1969 and served for four years before embarking on a career in commercial banking, during which time he also attended night school and earned an MBA from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He began his career at First American Bank in Virginia and worked at several institutions in the Washington, D.C. area over his thirty-year career. He and Bambi lived in Northern Virginia until 2004, when they retired to Albemarle Plantation in Hertford.
Dan loved nothing more than being surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, who coincidentally participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in the summer of 2014, two years before their grandfather's diagnosis. An avid sports fan, Dan adored his Washington Redskins, Villanova Wildcats, and Washington Nationals. (Decades before the Nationals brought baseball back to D.C., Dan worked as an usher at the Washington Senators stadium.) Known by all as a kind, funny, and gentle man (and gentleman), he always thought of others before himself. In retirement, he actively volunteered for multiple community services, including Meals on Wheels and Open Door, a community food bank. He was a faithful parishioner at St. Anne Catholic Church in Edenton.
He will be loved and missed by his wife of 47 years, Bambi Vaughan; two sons, Brendan Vaughan and wife, Renee Dale, of Brooklyn, NY, and Kyle Vaughan of Arlington, VA; four grandchildren, Roan and Dory Vaughan and Griffin and Gatsby Feather; two brothers, Patrick Vaughan and his wife, Judy, of Vienna, VA, and Michael Vaughan and his wife, Virginia, of Reno, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held Saturday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anne Catholic Church Parish Hall, 207 N. Broad St., Edenton. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Duke ALS Clinic, 932 Morreene Rd., Durham, NC 27705 or to Open Door, PO Box 721, Hertford, NC 27944.
