Alan Grove Brown

   Alan Grove Brown, 71, formerly of Norfolk, VA, and more recently of Gates County, NC, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016.

 

   Born in Auburn, NY on August 27, 1945, he was the sixth of 10 children born to the late Edward Samuel and Eva Mae Merritt Brown. Alan grew up in both Findlay, OH and Auburn, NY until he began his military career. A retired Senior Chief with the US Navy, he served for 20 years having traveled the world and supported multiple US efforts including the Vietnam, Lebanon & Granada War eras. Following his military service, he was employed with ECPI as a Computer and Electronics Teacher in Hampton, VA, and later as the owner of Gates County Service & Repair in Gates. An avid bowler and religious football fan, he worked at teaching himself piano and nursing his seedling maple trees.

 

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa McCoy Brown; his second wife, Sylvia Clark Bassett Brown; a sister, Clare; and by two brothers, Edwin and Roger.

 

   Surviving are his son, Eddie Brown and his wife Susie; two grandsons, Sammy and Benny Brown; a step-daughter, Leslie Bassett; three step-grandchildren, Chase Brooker, A.J. and Delana Higginbotham; four sisters, Marilyn Ortiz, Phyllis Brown, Mariellen Deacy, and Roberta Banner; and three brothers David Brown, Colin Cunningham, and Ron Cunningham.

 

   A private burial will be held in Hampton National Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is assisting the family with the cremation arrangements.

 

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated and may be made to the American Diabetes Association, who will also plant a memorial tree in his memory.
