Mardie Hathaway Cartwright, 70, of 802 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, NC, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from Duke University Medical Center where she was surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Cartwright was born in Norfolk, VA on January 28, 1946, and was the daughter of the late J. Malcolm Hathaway and Ruby Mae Richardson Hathaway Farrow. A retired hairstylist, she had successfully owned and operated Hair by Mardie for over 50 years in Norfolk and Chesapeake, VA, having been called to the profession at the age of 17 and then retiring in 2014. Her clients were like family to her and she loved making people beautiful. An active member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church and its Women's Embrace Missionary Group, she found great joy singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, Children's Church, and Vacation Bible School. A talented artist having won many awards and recognitions for her paintings, she also enjoyed giving to others and making friends while she volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
A loving wife, mother, sister, and aunt, surviving are her husband, Fenton Cartwright, Sr.; a daughter, Ronda R. Carper and husband Bruce of Belvidere; three step-daughters, Arlene Layden and husband Elton of Farmville, VA, Theresa Stallings and husband Ray of Hertford, and Dail Midgette and husband Doyle of Wendell; a step-son, Fenton Cartwright, Jr. and wife Kim of Hertford; a sister, Faye Brown of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, Mike Farrow and wife Molly of Berkley Springs, WV; two nieces, Charity, also of Berkley Springs and Brittany of South Carolina; two grand-goddaughters, Brittany Bodamer of Roanoke, VA and Jessica Beasley of Chesapeake; and a great-grand-godson, Camden Moore of Roanoke.
Due to inclement weather, memorial services have been moved to Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by the Rev. Lonnie Coker. A private inurnment will be held in Whiteville Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Monday, and all other times at the residence.
