Bryan Jerome Salter

   Bryan Jerome Salter, 80, of 030 NC Hwy 32 North, Sunbury, NC, went to be with his Lord, Friday, October 14, 2016, from his home.

 

   Mr. Salter was born in Atlantic, NC on March 23, 1936, and was the son of the late Charlie Wallace and Caddie Robinson Salter. A graduate of Atlantic High School, East Carolina College, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, he began his teaching career at Cape Hatteras School in Buxton as a teacher, coach, bus driver, and principal. He served as Principal of both Camden County High School, and later Sunbury Elementary School for 19 years, as Assistant Superintendent of Gates County Schools, and retired as Superintendent, with 35 years of service in education.

 

   A faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon, and as a member of the Pastor Search Committee, the Adult Men's Sunday School Class, and the Baptist Men's Fellowship. As a charter member of the Gates County Lions Club, he was longtime chairman of their annual Christmas Parade. A Past Master and 50 year member of the Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge, he was also a member of the Sudan Temple of the Shrine and the York Rite Bodies. Other memberships enjoyed were with the Roundtable Investment Club, service as President of the Gates County Rural Health Association, former Vice-Chairman of the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Board and Finance Board, and the Gates County Social Services Board of Directors.

 

   An avid fisherman and gardener, he often shared the fruits of his labors with many.

 

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Myrna Salter Kington; and a nephew, Charles Kington.

 

   Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Sondra Rountree Salter; two sons, Bryan Jerome Salter, Jr. and his family, Shannon, Noah, and Andrew, of Raleigh, and Stephen Brent Salter and his family, Tina, Shannon, and Stephanie, of Sunbury; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

   Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Beulah Baptist Church and will be officiated by his pastor, The Rev. Tom Hall. Burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, or in the fellowship hall of Beulah Church immediately following services on Tuesday, or all other times at the residence.

 

   Memorial contributions may be made to Beulah Baptist Men's Fellowship, or to the Gates County Lions Club.
