Florine Hurdle Weeks, 96, of 1382 Lynch’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 in her home.
Mrs. Weeks was born in Perquimans County on May 9, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Jerome W. and Flora Ward Hurdle. Before retiring, she had worked at the Virginia State Inspection Service, Lipton Tea, and as a clerk with Belk-Tyler. A faithful member of Ramoth-Gilead Baptist Church, she enjoyed both country and gospel music, entertainment in general, and mostly, being with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jay Stallings and Paul Weeks, Jr.; a special friend, Rufus “Tank” Hewitt; a son, Carey Stallings; a son-in-law, Otis Bunch; a granddaughter, Monica Umphlett; and by two sisters, Alice Hofler and Delma Ann Dale.
Surviving are three daughters, Ernestine S. Bunch of Maple, Freda S. Brown and husband Donald of Chesapeake, VA, and Brenda S. Umphlett and husband M.Q. of Gates; two sons, Mac Stallings of St. Matthews, SC and Paul Stallings and wife Earline of Elizabeth City; a sister, Carolyn Sanders of Newport News, VA; a brother, D.T. Hurdle of Belvidere; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Ramoth-Gilead Baptist Church and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. Ken Littleton. A private burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jon Jackson Scholarship Fund, in care of Ramoth-Gilead Church, 1308 School House Road, or to Albemarle Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 189, both in Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to care-givers, Barbara Bunch, Marie Olah, and Serena Harshbarger, and to the staff of Albemarle Hospice, for the wonderful and devoted care given to their loved one in her time of declining health.
