George Eldon Winslow, 96, of 102 Phelps Street, Hertford, NC, died Friday, November 18, 2016 in his home.
Mr. Winslow was born in Perquimans County on March 21, 1920, and was the son of the late Thomas Russell and Cora Byrum Winslow. A graduate of Perquimans County High School, he later attended NC State College. A veteran, he served in the Army Air Forces during World War II from 1943 to 1945 in Europe as a tail gunner on the B-24 Liberator. He later served as an enforcement officer with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission as well as 27 years as the Hertford mail carrier with the US Postal Service from which he retired. Eldon was a member of the Hertford United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served on various committees. He was a past president of the Hertford Jaycees and was a charter member of the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. Other enjoyments included gardening and sharing his goods with others, hunting, fishing and paddling his 1945 Grumman canoe. A humble man, he was truly loved and will be missed by all that knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elliott Winslow, two sisters, Ruth Kornegay and Betty Anne Wacker, and a brother, Russell Winslow.
Surviving are his two daughters, Sara Elliott Winslow and Anne Winslow Manning and husband, Tommy; three grandchildren, Thomas Manning and wife, Dana, Greta Manning Traxler and husband, Dale, and Crystal Manning Josleyn and husband, Connor; two great-grandchildren, James Thomas Manning V and Adeline Jane Traxler; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Hertford United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Jane Leechford and Chaplain Corbin Cherry. A private inurnment will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church’s fellowship hall immediately following the service and all other times at the residence. Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the amazing caregivers who were a true blessing to him and his family and to the staff of Vidant Chowan Hospital and Albemarle Home Care and Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC 27944 and designated for either the church or the Ruth E. Winslow/Thelma W. Elliott Scholarship Fund.
