Jack Trotman Evans, 80, of 107 White’s Landing Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

Mr. Evans was born in Chowan County on July 7, 1936, and was the son of the late Carey Moses and Cora Bell Bass Evans. The vice-president and manager of Byrum True Value Hardware for 48 years, after retiring in 2004 he enjoyed time with his sons, working on his Daddy’s farm with Mike, and playing music with Steve. Other church involvement included past service on the Building Committee, work as an RA Leader, serving as the church treasurer, Youth Choir Leader, and as the church music director for 44 years. Other areas of Christian service included membership on the State Advisory Committee for the Baptist Aging Ministry, work with the NC Baptist Men’s Missions, and singing with the Rocky Hock Quartet for over 50 years.

Community involvement was seen through his membership in the Rocky Hock Ruritan Club where he was a past president and currently served as the club treasurer, and where he had received both the club’s and the district’s Ruritan of the Year Award. He founded the club’s Relay for Life Team, benefiting Cancer research, and through those efforts with the Rocky Hock Opry, they had raised nearly $500,000. He had also served as secretary and on the Board of Directors of the Edenton Steamers. Recently, for his many works in the church and community, he was awarded The Order of The Long Leaf Pine by Governor Pat McCrory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, infant Mary Louise Evans and Ruth E. Nixon; and by brothers, Shelton Lee Evans and Carroll A. Evans, Sr.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 59 years, Frances Chappell Evans; and their children, Mike Evans and wife Marcia, Steve Evans and wife Sheila, and Karen Miller and husband Paul, all of Edenton; two brothers, Wallace Evans of Edenton and Frank Evans of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Andrew Evans and wife Holly, Matthew Evans and wife Claire, Lindsey Wendle and husband Joey, Evan Miller, Samuel Evans and wife Breann, and Noah Evans; and five great-grandchildren, Harper, Harrison, Hudson, Ivy, and Ty Evans.

Friends may join the family in the Family Life Center immediately following the church service, and all other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a contribution in his memory to either of two areas that were dear to him, the Building Fund of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, 113 Rocky Hock Church Road, or to the Rocky Hock Ruritan Club Relay for Life Team, in care of club secretary Keith Rollins, 501 Harris Landing Road, both in Edenton, NC 27932.
