Donald Albert Mersinger, 89, of 122 Creek Trail, Edenton, NC, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Waterbrooke Assisted Living of Elizabeth City.
Mr. Mersinger was born in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late George John and Agnes Frances Dougherty Mersinger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Powers Mersinger, and by his eldest son, Michael Edward Mersinger.
As a young man, he joined the US Navy and fought in the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War. He went on to serve for 24 years in total, in such diverse stations as Asmara, Washington, Delhi, Yokosuka, Antarctica (“two days and night”), and throughout Vietnam. After retiring at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer, he worked for 20 years in the Social Security Administration, most recently as manager of the Virginia Beach office.
He will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and coworkers alike. He is survived by sons Paul John and Patrick David Mersinger; daughter Leslie Marie Randolph; grandchildren, Marla, Michael, Emily, and Garrett, as well as ten great-grandchildren.
