Walter Lee Sloper, Jr., 82, of 105 Lake Wood Drive, Edenton, NC, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Sloper was born in Alexandria, VA on June 13, 1934, and was the son of the late Walter Lee, Sr. and Rose Elizabeth Beach Sloper. He was a retired Union painter having worked in the northern Virginia and Washington D.C. areas for over 35 years. He and his “bride,” Joan Marie Thomas purchased property in 2000 and moved from Manassas, Virginia, to Edenton in 2004 upon completion of their home. Walter and Joan attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He had been a member of Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion as well as several other veteran organizations. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War including 18 months on the USS Hopewell (DD-681) as a boilermaker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Marie O’Neill Sloper, infant triplets, Michael, Wayne, and Gary; a brother, Donald Wayne Sloper; and by two sisters-in-law, Marie Sloper and Carol Dowd.
Surviving are his longtime companion, Joan Marie Sevart Thomas; seven children, Walter Lee Sloper, III (Tracy) of Carrolton, TX, Marcy Elaine Sloper Anderson (Jim) of Springfield, VA, Robin Lord Schwartz of Centreville, VA, Alicia Ann Sloper Reynolds of Aldie, VA, Stephen Michael Sloper of Bristow, VA, Darren Lee Sloper of Reston, VA, Deeanna Lyn Sloper Riemondy (John) of Haymarket, VA, two step children, Richard Lawrence (Liz) of Richmond, VA, and Susan Rozakos Ehrhard (DJ) of Honea Path, SC; a brother, Theodore Keith Sloper of Alexandria; a sister-in-law, Betty Lou Sloper of Mount Pleasant, SC; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his two canine companions, Blondie and Dagwood; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home, 735 Virginia Road, Saturday, December 10th 4:00-6:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 11th at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and will be officiated by The Rev. J. Malone Gilliam. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 548, Edenton, NC 27932 or to any veteran’s organization.
