John Julius Schartner

   John Julius Schartner, of Hertford, NC, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 in his home, where he was surrounded by the love of his family.

   Mr. Schartner was born in Allegheny County, PA on July 7, 1920, and was the son of the late August and Augusta Schartner. He spent his first 50 years living in Prospect Park, PA where he married his high school sweetheart, Betty, and raised their three daughters. John attended Pennsylvania Military College, served in the US Navy as a radarman on the USS Boxer during WW II, and retired from a 42 year career with Westinghouse. Each place he lived (PA, NC, SC, NJ, and FL) benefited from the many ways he contributed, including his church leadership, Masonic Lodge, and community projects.

   A devoted family man, he also enjoyed helping others. He thrived residing by the sea and was blessed to live his later years in the Florida Keys and Hertford gathering strength by fishing and crabbing whenever possible. His family will miss his thoughtfulness, kindness, sense of humor, and “fix it” skills.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, to whom he was married 68 years, a sister, and three brothers.

   Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy McKelvey (Neal), Linda Cox (Larry), and Ginny Halter (Bob); six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Patrick, Kristie, Doug, Amy, and Alyssa; and eight great-grandchildren, Connor, Jack, T.J., Kylie, Mackenzie, Adelyn, Drew, and Sloane.

   A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Hertford United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Jane Leechford.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made either to The Open Door Food Pantry, P.O. Box 721, Hertford, NC 27944, or to a charity of one’s choice.

   Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
