Robert Wayne Halsey

Robert Wayne Halsey, 74, of 237 Country Club Drive, Edenton, NC, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 in Vidant Inpatient Hospice, Greenville.

Mr. Halsey was born in Chowan County on June 12, 1942, and was the son of the late Edgar Leon, Sr. and Mary Pierce Halsey. While a student at John A. Holmes High School, he played football for the infamous Coach Billings, and after graduation, he along with six of his energetic classmates joined the Army and went to Basic Training together. A member of Edenton Baptist Church, his community involvement included past membership in both the Edenton and Hertford Jaycees, the Edenton Lions Club where he served as President in 1987-88, as Zone Chairman in 1988-89, and during that term was voted Lion of the Year, and the Yeopim Ruritan Club, serving two terms as President and receiving the Ruritan of the Year Award in 1999.

Mr. Halsey owned and operated Halsey’s Lawn & Garden until his retirement in 2007. Favorite pastimes were golfing, and playing with his three young grandsons. The grandsons gave him the drive and motivation to push onward during these last years of declining health.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Fitz, and by his brother, Edgar L. Halsey, Jr.

Surviving are his loving wife, Thelma Jethro Halsey; four children, Wayne Tarkington (Barbie), and Elizabeth Farrar (Charles), all of Greenville; and Heather Williams (Chris), and Adam Evans, all of Edenton; a sister, Paulette Weikel (Richard) of Sunbury; a brother, Paul Halsey (Lori) of Newport News, VA; and eight grandchildren, Brien, Hayden, and Anna Claire Tarkington, Chelsea and Justin Farrar, and Hunter, Evan, and Heath Williams.
