Glenn Huylett Perry, Sr.

   Glenn Huylett Perry, Sr., 92, of 213 West Eden Street, Edenton, NC, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016 at his home.

 

   Born on October 5, 1924 in Cannon’s Ferry, Chowan County, he was the third oldest of ten children born to John Elmer, Sr. and Mattie Amanda Knight Perry.

 

   An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater, specifically The Philippines and Japan, and was a member of the Edward G. Post #40 of the American Legion with more than 50 years of continuous membership. He was a faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church and its Lloyd E. Griffin Men’s Bible Class.

 

   1n 1965, he became the Chowan County Jailer and a Deputy Sheriff, and as such was the last jailer to live in the historic Jailer’s House. Recognized as the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Chowan County in 1980, he retired as the county Sheriff in 1986.

 

   In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Perry Warren and Mary Emma Perry Spivey; and by his brothers, John Elmer, Jr. “J.E.”, James William “Snook”, Carroll Shepherd “Teeny Boy”, Thomas, and Ted Perry.

 

   Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Agnes Jean Britton Perry; his daughter, Bonita Perry McCall and husband David of Edenton; his sons, Glenn Huylett Perry, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Raleigh, and Darren Randall Perry and wife Carol of Greenville. He was the loving and proud grandfather to grandson, John David McCall, and to granddaughters, Olivia Britton Perry and Elizabeth Brantley Perry. Also surviving are his sister, Paige Perry Hollowell; his brother Emmett Knight Perry and wife Lillian, all of Edenton; and three sisters-in-law, Sue Perry of Mooresville, and Bessie Perry and Audrey Leary, both of Edenton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

   Funeral services will be held Monday, December 26th, at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by his pastor, The Reverend David Brooks. Immediately following the church service, the family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall. At all other times they will receive friends at the residence. The burial on the family plot in Beaver Hill Cemetery will follow the reception and will be conducted by Dr. Jesse Croom.
