Legion Owens Britton

   Legion Owens Britton, 81, of Edenton, NC died Thursday, January 12, 2017 in Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

   Mrs. Britton was born in Chowan County on September 3, 1935, and was the daughter of the late William Charles and Edith Alexander Owens.  A retired administrative assistant from the Chowan County ASCS office, she was the first woman in North Carolina to serve as its Director of the NC Federal Women’s Program.  Following her retirement, she worked for several years at the Barker House.  A member of Edenton Baptist Church, she also enjoyed membership in the Edenton Chapter #302, The Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as Worthy Matron, was active with the Edenton Historical Commission, and had served as President with the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junius Frank Britton; a daughter, Janet Britton O’Donnell; her grandson, Patrick O’Donnell; and by a brother, Thomas Owens.

   Surviving are her son, Charles A. Britton of Edenton; her brother, Edd Owens and wife Carolyn, also of Edenton; two granddaughters, Shelly Williams and Madison Britton; and two great-granddaughters, Britton and Mikayla Williams.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church, and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. David Brooks.  A private entombment will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.  Friends may join the family Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and again in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service on Sunday.
