Wayland West Byrum, 77, of 104 Jackson Street, Edenton, NC, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Byrum was born on July 11, 1939, and was one of seven children born to the late William Vandie Byrum, Sr. and Ada White Byrum. The former co-owner of Hobbs Implement Company, he retired after more than 48 years of employment. Later, he worked at the Hancock Station Recycling Center, as a poll worker with the Chowan County Board of Elections, and as a funeral assistant with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory. A member of Countryside Church of Christ, another area of faithful service to his Lord included both leading the music, and assisting the patients in their attendance, of the Sunday School services at Britthaven Nursing Home of Edenton. He and his wife worked in that ministry for over 32 years. For several years Mr. Byrum was a member of the North Carolina National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Esther Mae Byrum, Beatrice Ward, and Ruby Davis Nixon; and by his brothers, Vandie, Jr. and Mark Byrum.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 57 years, Peggy Twiddy Byrum; his daughter, Stacey Byrum Rich, her husband Mark, and their son, Walker Byrum Rich of Edenton; his brother, Sammy Byrum and wife Peggy of Edenton; two sisters-in-law, Audrey and Chip Byrum; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family whom he loved, and who loved him.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be officiated by his pastor, the Rev. Bob Brock, and by the Rev. Thomas Biggs. A private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Edward Hughes, 100 Tip Toe Road, Edenton, or in the funeral home immediately following the service.
