Gene Webb White, 90, of 97 Taylor Mill Road, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, VA.
Mr. White was born in the Roduco community of Gates County on December 10, 1926, and was the son of the late William Robert White and Sallie Mae Eure White. He graduated from high school in 1942 at the age of 16 and had excelled as an honor student. After graduation, he lied about his age, joined the United States Navy, and served aboard three ships, the USS Alger, the USS Forrester, and a troop ship. He traveled the world, served in both the European and American Theaters, sailed the Pacific Ocean, and spent time in San Diego, CA. He loved his Navy years and the friends he made. Later he married Nellie Mae Eure, and to that marriage was born a daughter.
His mentor in life was Edward Temple of Lawrenceville, VA, and together they started a business in the 1960s, Wood Producers Logging Company. Gene Webb retired at the age of 70.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willard R. White and wife Emma Lee, formerly of Gatesville.
Surviving are his daughter, Delores McMillan, a grandson, Chris McMillan, and a great-grandson, Emerson Webb McMillan, all of South Carolina.
Other survivors include his best friend and companion, Nell Long, and her family of Eure. For many years they shared a wonderful life together. Also left are cousins, Joe Dyke of Florida, and Deannie Rand of Texas; and nieces, Linda Pierce of Franklin, VA and Susan Kennington of Como.
Gene Webb also had four beloved dogs in his life, Lucky, Layaway, Mac, and Lady. We pray there are dogs in Heaven. That would make him happy.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Eure Christian Church Cemetery, and will be conducted by the Revs. Wayne Gardner, Wade Bennett, and Joe McKnight. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the graveside service on Sunday, and all other times at the residence.
