Kitty Johnson Sawyer

   Kitty Sue Johnson Sawyer, 82, of 706 S. Church Street, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

   Mrs. Sawyer was born in Halifax County on February 8, 1935, and was the daughter of the late William Clifton and Lottie Verla Jones Johnson. An active member of Hertford Baptist Church where she had retired as its secretary/bookkeeper after 36 years, she had also served on various church committees, was a GA Leader, and had taught Sunday school for many years. Other community involvement included service with Girls Scouts.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Carlyle "Carl" Sawyer, Sr., and by a brother, Norman Johnson.

   Surviving are her daughter, Deborah S. Reed and husband Bob; her son, Carlyle Sawyer and wife LuRee, all of Hertford; three brothers, Gene Johnson and Teddy Johnson, both of Manteo, and Mayhue Johnson of Shallotte; four grandchildren, Heather Higgins and husband Brian, Robbie Reed and wife Amber, Caroline Sawyer and fiancé Travis, and Caitlin Doyle and husband Brett; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Maci Higgins, Trenton Reed, and Lydia Doyle.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by the Rev. Don Carter. A private burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Hertford Baptist Church, PO Box 34, Hertford, NC 27944.
