Shirley Harrell Platts

   Shirley Harrell Platts, 81, of 531 Merrimac Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Vidant Chowan Hospital.

   Mrs. Platts was born in Chowan County on December 17, 1935, and was the daughter of the late Lester Isaac and Lonie Evans Harrell. A graduate of East Carolina University, she was a retired teacher, having worked in the Virginia Beach, Kinston, NC, and Chowan County school systems. A faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and its Women On Missions, she also enjoyed membership in the Daughters of The American Revolution, and had volunteered with the Meals On Wheels nutrition program.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Privott, and by a brother, Wilbur Harrell.

   Surviving are her husband, Paul Kingsley Platts, Sr.; her daughter, Harriet Platts and husband, Dr. Fred Davis, of Seattle, WA; her son, Paul Kingsley Platts, Jr. and wife, Michelle, of Apex; a sister, Hilda Goodwin of Edenton; two brothers, Gerald Harrell of Raleigh and Gene Harrell of Cleveland, TN; and two grandchildren, Jenna and Gavin Platts.

   Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church, and will be officiated by her cousin, The Rev. Tony Evans, and by Dr. James Horton, the church’s Senior Pastor. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence.

   Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, 205 Convention Drive, Cary, NC 27511 (www.ncbaptist.org), and are to be designated for use by the “Embrace” program. This program specifically targets women’s studies and missions throughout the state.
