Lillian Farr Dahl was born in Colonia, NJ in 1921, later lived in Boonsboro, MD, Virginia Beach VA, Greensboro and Washington, NC before finally settling in Edenton, NC. Daughter of the late William T. Farr and Margaret B. Farr, she married George M. Dahl in 1945 and enjoyed 66 years of marriage. During their 1945 Honeymoon in NYC they witnessed the city's celebrations of Germany's WWII surrender. She died May 5th, 2017, on what would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary. Lillian Dahl was very proud to have worked during WWII in the Merck Pharmaceutical Lab where Dr. Fleming's penicillin was developed. Penicillin was so precious that Brinks trucks picked it up to save soldier's lives. Mercks wanted to finance her college education but she fell in love with George Dahl and chose to be a stay-at-home wife.
Lillian lived a full life; she and George visited their daughter in Germany and traveled to Iceland where George was stationed during WWII. Lillian was kind, classy and gutsy; she rode horses, loved sailing and tolerated flying in her husband's airplane. As a devoted mother she took her daughter to art lessons in Hagerstown, MD every Saturday for 6 years and waited for two hours until class was over. Lillian was also lucky, as she never fell off her horse, Silver Pet, never broke a bone and never had a car accident or a traffic ticket. Lillian was always so cheerful and positive despite becoming legally blind at age 79. Everyone who met her loved her.
Surviving are her two children, a son, Georg W. Dahl and his wife Kay Boyd Dahl of Norfolk, VA; and a daughter, Robin Dahl Sams and her husband Commander John L. Sams USN, ret. of Edenton. Lillian had only one grandchild, Dr. Georg J. Dahl, and his wife Alison Fein Dahl, also of Norfolk; four great-grandsons, Zachary Dahl, Owen Dahl, Landon Young and Charlie Dahl; two nieces, Karen Horbatt and Nancy Guthrie; and a nephew, Paul Horbatt.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Felton and Jessie Hulbert; and by a niece, Margaret Killmer.
A memorial service will be held Monday, May 15th at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service. A private inurnment will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
