Jane Evans Spivey, 77, of 950 Hwy 158 East, Sunbury, NC, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, in Lake Prince Woods, Suffolk, VA, where she was surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Spivey was born in Chowan County on February 14, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Willie and Addie Marie Bright Evans. For more than 25 years, she worked with Carter Furniture in Suffolk, and then she and her husband together owned and operated The County Market in the Eason’s Crossroads section of Gates County. She was a faithful member of Zion United Methodist Church where she served as its treasurer for many years. Family and friends were important to her, and the many happy times she spent with her Bridge Club were among her most cherished.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sue E. Eaton, and by a brother, McCoy Evans.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Robert E. “Bobby” Spivey; her daughter, Deborah S. Creamer and husband Mark of Chesapeake, VA; her son, Craig Spivey and wife Tammy of Wilmington, NC; two sisters, Francis E. Lassiter of Eure and Grace E. Stafford of Windsor, VA; a brother, Willie Evans, Jr. of Suffolk. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Reid Hoffler, Sydney Spivey, and Mitchell Spivey, who lovingly referred to her as “GJ”.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Zion United Methodist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Steve Hall, and by a longtime friend, The Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home, or in the church social hall for a reception immediately following the service on Thursday, or all other times at the residence.
