Robert Elliott Goodman

   Robert Elliott Goodman, 89, of Gates, NC, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, VA, from complications stemming from a recent stroke.

   Mr. Goodman was born April 14, 1928, was the son of the late William H. Goodman, Sr. and Mae Belle Fanny Goodman, and grew up and spent his entire life in the Gates community. With his father, he helped run the family hardware and feed store, W.H. Goodman & Son, located on NC Highway 37 in Gates, until retiring in 1991. A member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church, he also enjoyed membership in the Gates Senior Citizens Club.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, William H. “Bill” Goodman, Jr., who had lived in Camden; a nephew, William H. Goodman, III; and by Alene Felton Everett, his special friend and companion of Franklin, VA, who died March 24th of this year.

   Surviving are two nephews, Winston Elliott Goodman of Reno, Nevada, and David Edney Goodman of Eugene, Oregon; a great-niece, Jennifer Lee Goodman-Essman of Morrison, Colorado, and a great-nephew, Darrin Ellison Goodman of Fort Collins, Colorado. Also surviving are Alene’s daughters, Annie Sue Blythe, Maggie E. Rhodes, and Sharon E. Piersa.

   Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 25th, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and will be officiated by his longtime friend, The Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will follow in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
