O.B. Jones

March 28, 1925 — July 26, 2017

O.B. Jones

After a few years of declining health, Otis B. Jones, (better known as “B”), 92, more recently of 104 Canal Street, Camden, went home to Heaven on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Born on March 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Otis Brown Jones, Sr. and Exie Parker Jones, and the husband of the late Hazel Piland Jones, his beloved wife of 63 years.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, and was stationed in Guam. There he worked on airplane electronics, a job that utilized his talent with machinery and electrical instruments. Many will remember when he farmed in Gates County, worked as an Electrical and Instrumentation Manager at CF Industries in the Tunis community of Hertford County, NC, and then at Conoco Industries in Baltimore, MD. After retirement, and their move from Gates County, he and Hazel lived in Suffolk, VA, until her death in December, 2008. A devout Christian, he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at several area Baptist churches while living in those respective communities. He had also enjoyed membership in Gideons International, Gatesville Masonic Lodge #126, and the Harrellsville Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his grandson, Brent Michael Perry.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Jones and husband Ed Turner, and Lynn Berkhimer and husband Kirk, all of Camden; two granddaughters, Kelly Bray and husband Robbie of Kill Devil Hills, and Karyn Bernas and husband Jay of Virginia Beach, VA; and his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Zachary Bernas. The family agrees there was never a sweeter, more loving man than their father, grandfather, and loved one.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville. Burial will be private in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Saturday, and all other times at Carolyn and Ed’s home, 104 Canal Street, Camden.

In recent years, “B” became very fond of Pastor Josue Chaves and his wife Courtney, and loved them as family. Josue pastors a missionary church in Argentina, but will make his way to Gatesville to conduct the funeral service. It was “B”s wish that in lieu of flowers, tax deductible contributions be made to the Chaves ministry.  Checks should be made to Store House Ministries, 125 St. Paul’s Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23510.
