Walton Harold Whitehead

   Walton Harold "Birddog" Whitehead, 74, of 108 East Camp Perry Road, Hertford, NC, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

   Mr. Whitehead was born in Pasquotank County on July 6, 1943, and was the son of the late Walton Howell and Louise Watson Whitehead.  A retired agent with Farm Bureau Insurance, he was an active member of Berea Baptist Church, having served as a Deacon, taught the Partners in Christ Sunday School Class, and managed the Handyman Ministry.  Other enjoyments included membership in Durants Neck Ruritan Club, his service on the Executive Board of Camp Cale, and through the years having served in various capacities with many other organizations.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Whitehead. 

   Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Sylvia Jones Whitehead; a daughter, Kimberly Whitehead Meads and husband Jeff of Elizabeth City; a son, Paul Wade Whitehead and wife Shannon of Hertford; two sisters, Janis Adams and husband Ervin of Moyock and Dona Yunker of Elizabeth City; and was lovingly known as "Papa" to his five grandchildren, Adam Meads and wife Summer, and Erica and John Meads, and Hannah and Kaitlin Whitehead.

   A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Berea Baptist Church, and will be officiated by his pastor, The Rev. Jason Wise.  Friends may join the family at the residence.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Berea Baptist Church, 2033 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
