Gerald Thomas Lassiter, Sr.

Gerald Thomas Lassiter, Sr., 82, of 1503 West Queen Street, Edenton, NC, passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017, in Vidant Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Lassiter was born in Chowan County on December 21, 1934, and was the son of the late William Jackson and Dora Smith Lassiter. For 26 years he worked with the Edenton Cotton Mill, and after it ceased operations, he worked as a jailer with the Chowan County Sheriff’s Dept. until he retired. Raised in the fellowship of the First Christian Church, he faithfully attended Immanuel Baptist Church. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was a life member of the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion. He had been selected as the Honorary Mayor of the Edenton Mill Village, and had received the “key” to that historic community. Another area of particular enjoyment was his Saturday Poker Club, when he played cards with Henry Phelps, Dale Wright, Jesse Bass, and Elbridge “Smitty” Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Owens Lassiter; and by two sisters, Daphne Myriam Lassiter, and Faye Twiddy.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Kennedy of Edenton; a son, Gerald T. “Jerry” Lassiter, Jr. and wife Victoria of Greenville; two sisters, Madge Whitehurst and Edna Harrell, both of Edenton; seven grandchildren, Kelli Joco and husband Willie, Shaun Kennedy, Gerald T. Lassiter, III, Emily Lassiter, Jacob Lassiter, Gracy Lassiter, and Ethan Lassiter; and four great-grandchildren, Mylene and Sadie Joco, and Hayden and Adilyn Lassiter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, and will be conducted by the Revs. Bernie Hurdle and Thomas Biggs. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made to the Edward G. Post 40 of the American Legion, 1317 W. Queen Street, Edenton, 27932.
