Laura Skinner Evans, 85, of Tyner, NC, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017.
Mrs. Evans was born in Chowan County on December 28, 1931, and was the daughter of the late William Cleveland Skinner, Sr. and Lucille Umphlett Skinner. Formerly employed with the Law Office of Max Busby in Edenton, she had worked with the Albemarle Commission Jobs Training Program, as a Realtor, and as a contracted Land/Deed Abstractor. As long as her health allowed, she was a faithful member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, and for many years was active in its Adult Choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Hollowell Evans, Sr. and by a brother, Bill Skinner.
Surviving are two daughters; Kitty Evans Barringer and husband Jerry of High Point; Charlene Evans Reed and husband Bob of Elizabeth City; two sons; Melvin H. Evans, Jr. of Edenton, Eric B. Evans and wife Lilian of Charlotte; her sister, Nell Skinner Turner of Virginia Beach, VA; eight grandchildren; Anna Barringer, Jonathan Barringer, Bryan Evans, Maya Evans, Troy Evans, Kris Evans, Jamie Phillips, and Jenny Vinson; one great-grandchild; Jordan Evans; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. in the Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery, and will be conducted by a longtime family friend, Woody Knight, and the Rev. Ron Parr. Friends may join the family in the church’s Family Life Center immediately following the service.
