Benny Dale “Ben” Morgan, 77, of 104 Schooner Landing Drive, Edenton Lake and Harbor, Edenton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 in Edenton House, his residence for three and half years. Mr. Morgan bravely struggled for years with Lewy Body Dementia, with Parkinsonism, and other debilitating afflictions.
Ben was born to Darius Edward and Anna Dorothy Morgan in Ronceverte, Greenbrier County, WV, and moved to Portsmouth, VA as a young man. He lived in the Bennetts Creek area of Suffolk, VA until his retirement in 1997. Upon retirement from the Hampton Roads Shipping Association-International Longshoremen’s Association he moved to Edenton.
His Virginia affiliations included HRSA-ILA Local 1840, the Loyal Order of The Moose, the Portsmouth Area Civil War Roundtable, his hunt club, and his twice yearly If You Can Hack It fishing expeditions. Prior to his illness, Ben embraced Edenton as a faithful member of Edenton United Methodist Church where he served with The EUMC Methodist Men, The Joy Choir and The Puppet Ministry. He was a dedicated Ruritan, and volunteered with both the Food Pantry and Red Cross Blood Drive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Randy, and by twin grandsons.
Ben is survived by his best friend and wife of 42 years, Candace Yeager Morgan; his sister-in-law, Sandra Frazier and husband Sam, Jr. of Portsmouth, VA; special nephews, Sam Frazier, III and wife Sue, also of Portsmouth, and Stephen Frazier and wife Lily of Chongqing, China. Also surviving are his three children, Scott Morgan and wife Pam of Union, WV, Kathy Patton, and Stanley Morgan; and two grandsons, Joseph Patton and Louis Morgan, all of Vinton, VA. His two sisters, Carletta Fletcher of Williamsburg, WV and Robbie Bostic and her husband George of Ronceverte, along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Benny, Ben Ben, Benny Boo will be missed by his many loving caregivers and friends at Edenton House.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church, and will be officiated by Pastor Chris Aydlett. Friends may join the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service, and at other times in the afternoon and evenings at the residence. A private burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Chesapeake, VA.
