Blanche Jessup Chappell Matter, of Hertford, NC, died Saturday, September 9, 2017 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Edenton, NC. She was 96.
Mrs. Matter was born in Belvidere, NC, and was the daughter of the late Johnny and Maude Jessup Chappell. A retired teacher from Virginia Public Schools, she was a member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church, and a former member of Great Neck Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Matter; a son, Milton Matter; and by two sisters, Vivian Merrill and Thelma Riddick.
Surviving are her son, Foster Matter and wife Letitia of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Mitza Autry and husband Ralph of Hertford; a sister, Dixie Porter of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. in Whiteville Grove Baptist Church, 373 Perry's Bridge Road, Belvidere, NC, and will be officiated by Pastor Lonnie Coker. Friends may join the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Inurnment will be Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m. in Rosewood Memorial Park, 601 N. Witchduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA.
