Helen Chappell Sumner, 100, of Albemarle Village Apartments, Hertford, NC, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2017, in Vidant Inpatient Hospice, Greenville.
Mrs. Sumner was born in Pasquotank County on March 3, 1917, and was the daughter of the late William A. and Ella Lamb Chappell. Retired from Don Juan Mfg. Corp., she was the wife of the late William Leslie "Rip" Sumner.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by daughters, Leslie Hope Sumner and Elaine S. Hunter; a son, William Leslie Sumner, Jr.; a son-in-law, Jack Thornton; a sister, Susan Chappell; and by brothers, Haywood and William Penn Chappell.
Surviving are four daughters, Janice S. Thornton of Swansboro, Dorcas S. Adams and husband Harvey of Chelsea, AL, and Joyce S. Elliott and husband Billy, and Nellie S. Gregory and husband Paul, all of Hertford; a son-in-law, W.G. "Pete" Hunter of Edenton; three sisters, Laura Ward of Hertford, Rose Jones of Ayden, and Nellie Perry of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Emily Ann Hall of Chesapeake, VA; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Don Carter. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at the home of Paige and Burt Eure, 118 White Hat Road, Hertford.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice, P.O. Box 8489, Greenville, NC 27835, and place "In Memory of Helen Sumner" on the memo line of your contribution, or to one's favorite charity.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Mrs. Sumner's caregiver and companion, Christine Reid, for the love and comfort she gave their loved one over these last years.
